The relationship this practice has with each patient is based on trust that information will not be given to external persons or organisations without the patient\u2019s consent. All members of the practice team are expected to comply with this policy and are advised to be aware of the confidentiality clause within their staff contract. Breaches of this policy could lead to dismissal.<\/p><p>\u2018Standards for Dental Professionals\u2019, guidance from the General Dental Council, notes that practitioners must \u2018Protect the confidentiality of patients\u2019 information\u2019.<\/p><p>This means:<\/p><ul class=\"bullet_points\"><li>Using information only for the purposes for which it was given.<\/li><li>Preventing information from being accidentally revealed.<\/li><li>Preventing unauthorised access by keeping information secure at all times.<\/li><\/ul><p>Only in exceptional circumstances can a breach of confidentiality be justified.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0453aba elementor-widget-tablet__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0453aba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Preventing breaches of confidentiality<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8d082b0 elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8d082b0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We will keep all confidential data stored securely and will not allow it to be placed in areas where data may be seen by unauthorised personnel.<\/p><p>We will not provide information:<\/p><ul class=\"bullet_points\"><li>To a school about a child\u2019s attendance.<\/li><li>To employers about a patient\u2019s appointments.<\/li><li>To third parties about appointments or leave answering machine messages.<\/li><li>Only leave messages to return the practice\u2019s phone call.<\/li><\/ul><p>Recall cards and other personal information will be sent in a sealed envelope.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bfe68c6 elementor-widget-tablet__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"bfe68c6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Disclosure of information<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7a81049 elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7a81049\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"inner_body\"><div class=\"container\"><p>If it is necessary to release information about a patient:<\/p><ul class=\"bullet_points\"><li>We will obtain the patient\u2019s consent first, where possible and make sure they understand what information is being released, why and any likely consequences.<\/li><li>We will release the minimum required.<\/li><li>We will be prepared to justify our decisions and follow on action.<\/li><\/ul><p>If we use patient information (eg. radiographs, study models) for teaching purposes we will gain the patient\u2019s consent and ensure the patient cannot be identified from the information released.<\/p><\/div><\/section>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-557da3c elementor-widget-tablet__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"557da3c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Exceptional circumstances<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e28701d elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e28701d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"inner_body\"><div class=\"container\"><p>Responsibility for disclosure rests with the patient\u2019s dentist only. Under no circumstances will any other member of our staff make such a decision.<br \/>There may be some circumstances when the dentist feels it would be in the public interest to breach a patient\u2019s confidentiality. In such cases we will seek advice from our indemnifier before releasing the patient\u2019s information to a third party.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>A court may order us to release information without the patient\u2019s consent. If so, we will only release the minimum information.<\/p><\/div><\/section>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fb4badf elementor-widget-tablet__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fb4badf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Access to records<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-035b56f elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"035b56f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"inner_body\"><div class=\"container\"><p>Patients have a right to see their records and we will meet any request within 40 days.
